Agents, Publicists, Publishers and more people to help you...
My goal is encourage writers. One of the joys in life is to see your words on paper, to hear them spoken on film or on stage or as an Audible book. Find that joy and share it.
HOW DO YOU FIND AN AGENT???
One writer I interviewed got an agent with a ONE SENTENCE query letter. Really! I know what it was and I see why it worked, but for most people it takes a little bit more. That is why you should listen to Barbara Poelle, of the Irene Goodman Literary Agency. She breaks it down to three things:
- The Hook
- The Book
- The Cook
More Agent News -- the best agents are the ones getting deals...
B.J. Daniels got a three-book deal with HQN for a new Western suspense trilogy. She is represented by Lisa Erback Vance at the Aaron M. Priest Literary Agency.
Simon Sebag Montefiore got a deal with Pegasus Books for his new novel, Red Sky at Noon. The British author of The Romanovs struck a North American rights agreement with Jessica Case
Donald Maass is fascinating not only is he a great agent, he has written some very useful books for aspiring writers. The Donald Maass Literary Agency is a literary agency for professional novelists -- when you think your work is good enough, contact him.

Andrea Brown - Literary Agent & Founder Big Sur Workshops
The Andrea Brown Literary Agency (ABLA) is located in San Francisco. I loved chatting with Andrea. ABLA agents are among the best. If you write YA, Middle Grade, or Picture books, then one of the best things you can do for yourself is attend one of her workshops. She has the famous Big Sur Workshop in December and in September she has one in Cape Cod where you will work closely with some of the best authors and agents in the business.
Mark Gottlieb of Trident Media Group is so enthusiastic about his clients. One of my favorites is Chuck Grossart, who has been a guest on Joy on Paper.
Lane Zachary - Literary Agent
She is Douglas Brunt's agent -- and is famed for bringing Louisa Mae Alcott's last book to the market.
She did the auction for one of my favorite books: Lavanya Sankaran's The Hope Factory.
I will be increasing my interviews with agents and publicists.
One of the things I will do is to list agents that are receptive to queries -- and info on exactly what type of books they are seeking. When you are looking at agents, don't write to one whose work you have not investigated. Find out what they like and be selective. Someone who hates zombies is not your ideal candidate for you latest walking dead book.
It takes research to find which agents might be open to your type of book. Start by looking at the books that are similar to your and then work backwards...read about the author, find out the name of their agent. Then research the agent.
Your letter MUST be addressed to a specific agent's interests.!
