One of the greatest joys in life is to see your words on paper or spoken on stage or screen. Your writing connects you to the past and to the future. You might not write a bestselling book, but a book is something that can -- sometimes almost by a miracle -- touch someone's heart. Perhaps not in your lifetime. It might be years before someone stumbles across your work -- and then finds just that one sentence, that one thought, that touches them. Perhaps it will give them comfort. Perhaps it will give them strength or courage. Your words through time. A precious gift to the world.

But always remember that there PURE JOY in your life is the love that you share. The family. The friends. The ones whose hand you can hold. Cling on to them. Cling with all your might. Don't let weeks go by -- or months -- without being in contact. Every minute you share is more valuable than anything you could ever possess. So be proud to cling. Be eager to cling. Cling to life and to the joys in your life. Be happy. Be the JOY OF JOYS in someone's life.

These are my JOYS. If you ever need to be inspired by a smile then come to this page. For a few minutes look at these faces of joy and then reach out to everyone you love and hold them tightly. You can never hug enough. You can never kiss enough. You can never love too much.

It is in his eyes...the goodness...the love of life....the pure joy...

My husband, my first joy, and then our two boys, the joys of my life.

My husband, my first joy, and then our two boys, the joys of my life.

A silly big brother...

A silly big brother...

Tolstoy got it wrong. He wrote:

Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

The truth is that happy families are the special ones. Unhappy families are all the same. Miserable. Peopled by those who hold grudges or can't share or are petty and think only of themselves.

It is happy families that are happy in their own special way. They are silly. They are loving. They sing you awake -- and kiss you to sleep. They forgive and forget little slights as quickly as it takes time to say TKU. (I will tell you about that some day.)

These thoughts occurred to me one day when in a space of a few minutes we all said "Love you!" as we passed in each in the hallway -- on our way to the bathroom or the laundry room or the kitchen! It is really funny -- we weren't leaving for Europe or anything.

Our lives are filled with quick kisses, with little touches as we get up from the table, a tickle in the morning...and always, always, those two words: Love you!

Happy families are filled with joy every time they see each other.

I share these joyful faces with you in the hope that you will be inspired to stay close to your family. To love and to cling to them for all the days of your life. Remember, you are someone's JOY. Take care of yourself -- and take care of your loved ones. Nothing is more important than the time that you spend together. Possessions mean nothing -- in the end, all that you have are memories. Make sure that they are good ones. No wasted time. Find your joy and share it with each other.
